Apraxia Awareness Day

A Note from Ms. Hayward

Math
Today we learned what the word symmetry means. We talked about an object is symmetrical if both sides are exactly the same when folded in half. I drew some shapes on the board and had students come up to draw the lines of symmetry. Then we talked about how its not just shapes that can be symmetrical. I showed them that some of the letters in our alphabet can be symmetrical and pictures of objects such as a butterfly can be symmetrical too. Then I had students look around the classroom to find things that had symmetry (the tv for example, and some students' water bottles). Then students completed a page in their workbook where they had to draw the lines of symmetry in different shapes and then they had to draw the other half of some images.

UOI with Language Focus
Today students got their words on the week. This week is a review week so there are 30 words. Students had to pick 10 words and write them down. They will complete spelling sentences for the words they picked. These will be due on Thursday since we are not at school on Friday. Our test will also be on Thursday, where I will pick 10 words for the list.

Library
Today the students had time to go see Ms. Hayward at the library. She read them a book and they got to pick a new book to sign out. They also got some time to read with some stuffies.

Unit of Inquiry
Today we watched a few videos about what plants and animals need to survive in a habitat. We learned that they need food, water and shelter.  We also watched a video about how animals have adaptations that help them survive in specific habitats. For example, penguins and polar bears have a special layer of fat called blubber to keep them warm in the extremely cold temperatures. Camels have 2 layers of eyelashes to keep sand out of their eyes and special feet to help them walk on hot sand. They also have a hump to store water and nutrients while they have their long walks to find water. Then students started colouring a booklet called What's a Habitat? We will continue these tomorrow.

Have a great evening!
